Summary
The Duke of Lancaster, having rebelled in a bid to gain independence from the Empire, was ultimately defeated by the Emperor’s loyal knight, Laszlo Chrysus. The captured prize, however, was not the Duke but his young and graceful wife, Duchess Ethel Lancaster. Presented to the nobles as a “trophy of war,” Ethel was handed over by the Emperor to Laszlo, who happened to need a maid. Though considered now as his “property,” Ethel is prepared to end her life to avoid disgrace. Yet, to her surprise, Laszlo merely expects her to perform basic tasks, emphasizing that he actually hired her to be a real maid. To Ethel, however, Laszlo’s home, by her own refined standards, seemed unkempt and lacking. Drawing on her skills and experience as a duchess, Ethel gradually sets out to bring order and elegance to Lord Chrysus’s household.
